Happiest of birthday wishes to my brother!

My brother just got a new apartment and he needs most things, but I didn't want to get him a run-of-the-mill present like cutlery. Instead I opted to decorate his dining/living room!

He doesn't have any furniture, so I had to be creative with my slim budget to fill the room. But I think I did a pretty good job with a lot of help from the internet!

First I had to find inspiration. My brother has an awesome record collection, a lot of which is from the 80s, what a great place to start!

I went on Kijiji and found an awesome retro (made in 1983) dining set to make the focal piece of the room.

Next, I enlisted his help to pick out 12 of his favourite records. With some hook/screws I got for $7 at the hardware store I went to work making really cheap and changeable art!

This project was so easy, just screw two of the hooks into the wall and slip the record onto them.

Another theme I used was old school army. He already had the poster in the image below ("gee, I wish I were a man, I'd join the navy. We got this on our trip to NYC). He had really great ammunition cases that are now displayed on his dresser.

This art project was also really easy and cheap. I found some old army propaganda posters (his idea for his last apartment, but we never got around to it until now!) and with a bit of graphic design magic (thanks Jessi at Sparrows and Arrows!) made one of a kind art.

I hope you enjoy your new place bro!
