When I first started blogging last summer I posted a bit about my morning commute on my bike. Now that summer is back again I thought I'd give you a few pointers and hopefully inspire you to try biking to work! It takes a bit more effort with your outfits, especially if you don't get a chance to change at work. You need versatile outfits that are breezy, easy to bike in and are stylish (of course!).
Today I had a meeting at our downtown office, a short 10 minute bike ride away. I love biking during work hours, because I swear it saves time (traffic downtown is always crazy) AND parking/gas money.
First I had to fuel up. After an awesome cycling class at 6am I showered and put together a tasty breakfast.
I opted for a flowy top to optimize the breeze on the bike. Short pants help with catching on the gears.
As for hair, down is always best, but that flattens out with the helmet and gets boring. Try half up-half down looks that add variety and interest. Small earings also help, but you can always just take them off, but remember to put them back on at work!
Shoes are a big one! I hate having to bring a pair of shoes in my bag so I love outfits that look good with flats.
I wanted to show you the difference between biking and driving shoes. If I wasn't biking or walking long distances I would have worn either of these shoes instead:

I have to tell you this quick story:
ReplyDeleteThere I was, mulling what to wear tomorrow, knowing I would be walking to all of my appointments, and doing that thing where all I could see in my closet were things that went with heels and that I summarily disliked anyway (it's a mood, I swear). I sat down to my computer in a huff, to check my reader and think about things I'm better at designing than outfits.
Then, like a little electricity bolt, I thought "That Canadian girl, Emilie! She wears cute things." Et voila! Here you are with a breezy, flats-involved post!
Thanks for pulling me out of my funk:)
I wish I could see you all dolled up and riding to work! :) You are so environmentally friendly...and motivated. I could use some of that. :P
ReplyDeleteGood tips! Sounds like you've got it down to a science. :)
ReplyDeleteI live too far from my work to bike the whole way, but I do a combination car/bike commute with a Montague folding bike. They don't make a step-through frame, so it's hard to wear skirts on the bike - sometimes I just wear shorts and take the skirt in my bag, it's pretty small anyway, but any tips for riding the bike in a skirt?
